So where does Apple Valley get it’s name? It just so happens that back in the 1950’s and 1960’s, a developer by the name of Orin Thompson used to plant an apple tree in the front yard of every home that he had built. The area used to go by the name of Lebanon (which also is a regional park in the area called Lebanon Hills), but when there was a housing boom and the city incorporated, the name Apple Valley was taken up.
If you are wondering about the distance in proximity to Minneapolis or St. Paul, the drive is about 20 minutes to both. Apple Valley is close to a couple of major streets and highways that allow fast access to major highways. Apple Valley also has a couple of transit stations located on Cedar Avenue and Gaslight Drive by Carmike Cinemas as well as one off Pilot Knob and 160th St that serves surrounding communities.
One of the more famous attractions that Apple Valley has is the Minnesota Zoo. The Minnesota Zoo is open year round and is one of the best zoo’s in the country. Another added bonus is that there is an Imax Theater located at the Minnesota Zoo as well.
There are plenty of different housing options in Apple Valley real estate, the city has it all. You can find affordable single family homes in Palomino Hills or Great Oaks located by Palomino Drive and Pennock Ave. Garden View also offers affordable homes for first time home buyers in Apple Valley real estate. The area is located off of Pilot Knob and 150th in the southeastern corner of Apple Valley. Cobblestone Lake is a unique neighborhood that is centered around the lake that features miles of walking trails and scenic views. The development features a variety of different townhome options as well as single family homes. Some of Minnesota’s finest home builders are building in this wonderful neighborhood. Some of those builders include Charles Cudd, Rock Creek Builders and Severson Homes along with national builders Centex.
As always, the school system is top notch. Apple Valley belongs to the prestigious school district of 196 which is not only of the best in the State but also the Nation! The cities that make up the school district also include Eagan and Rosemount. Apple Valley High School and Eastview High School are the high schools within the city. There are also numerous elementary schools and middle schools.
The “downtown” part of Apple Valley is widely considered to be at the intersections of Cedar Ave and 150th St. There is a wide variety of retail ranging from every big box store to smaller local stores. The area is definitely not short on fine cuisine either, Apple Valley offers some of the only sushi restaurants south of the river and plenty of other fine dining as well.
Apple Valley real estate remains one of the more affordable areas to live around the Twin Cities. It is a growing community that has a lot to offer from the housing and it’s busy downtown district. The overall community is very solid, whether you are a young professional or looking to raise a family.
